2024 Speaker Biographies

Dr. Laura Bourgeau-Chavez, Michigan Technological University

Dr. Laura Bourgeau-Chavez is a senior research scientist at Michigan Tech Research Institute and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) of Michigan Technological University. She has been studying wetlands for over 20 years and has developed methods to detect and map invasive wetland plants, Phragmites and Cattail, from satellite and aerial imagery. Dr. Bourgeau-Chavez has several Great Lakes projects focused on understanding the effects of nutrient loading on coastal wetlands and their susceptibility to invasive species, mapping the widespread invasive Phragmites australis and working with wetland managers in developing monitoring and remediation strategies.

Emily has served on BHHC’s Board of Directors since 2013 and is currently serving as president.  She has been active in the Stewardship Committee since 2008.  She started the Oakland County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) in 2014.  She is a Conservation Steward in Michigan. Emily earned her bachelor’s degree in geology from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. and her master’s degree in environmental science from Duke University.  She worked for 18 years in environmental consulting, investigating and remediating contaminated soil and groundwater at industrial sites throughout the mid-Atlantic states, Ohio, and Michigan.  Emily is an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit.  She has extensive experience in preschool and K-12 education, particularly educating students with special needs, and was a founding school board member of the M.O.D.E.L. Community School, a charter school for students with autism in Toledo.

Patrick Canniff, Oakland County CISMA Coordinator

Patrick is the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Outreach Coordinator for Oakland County Parks and Recreation. He holds a M.S. in Conservation Ecology/Environmental Informatics from University of Michigan, and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Loyola University Chicago. Patrick has come to the CISMA from the Great Lakes Commission supporting their Aquatic Invasive Species program. Previously, Patrick has held positions working for the National Park Service (Sleeping Bear Dunes NL), Chicago Botanic Garden, and working with Bureau of Land Management (Twin Falls-ID field office). In his free time, you will likely find Patrick out on a hike, waist-deep in a vegetable garden, or behind a drum set.

Kaleigh Snoddy, Clinton River Watershed Council

Kaleigh has a B.S. in Environmental Science with a Specialization in Resource Management and Sustainability as well as a minor in Biology. As the Education and Stewardship Manager of the Clinton River Watershed Council, Kaleigh leads the program team in the coordination of CRWC’s education and stewardship programs and events, as well as the development of new programs. She is passionate about collective natural resource protection and fostering stewardship across all ages, working to educate residents ranging from K-12 students to homeowners.

Amanda Ruffini, Lake St. Clair CISMA

Amanda is a University of Denver Graduate with a Master’s in Natural Resource Management. Prior to joining CISMA, she worked for Oakland County in the Natural Resource Department, working on maintaining high quality natural areas in OC Parks, invasive species management, and restoration projects. She has also previously interned with the South Australian Research and Development Institute to develop a GIS protocol for mapping aquatic vegetation in the coastal zone. She spends her free time foraging in Oakland county and volunteering as a steward for MNA. Now a part of LSC CISMA, she works on invasive species management and restoration projects throughout Macomb and St. Clair Counties.

Kegan Schildberg, Oakland County Parks & Rec

Kegan Schildberg has worked in land management across the lower peninsula since graduating from Western Michigan University in 2011 with a BS in Natural Resource Management and Environmental Studies. In 2018 he obtained a master’s degree in Sustainability from the university of Wisconsin Superior. He has two young children, and therefor never sleeps.

Eric Diesing, Oakland County Parks & Rec

Eric graduated from Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and Natural Resources and a master’s degree in biology focusing on freshwater ecosystems and ecological restoration. He has completed Wildland Hydrology level 1 and 2 trainings and holds industrial and construction stormwater operator certifications among several others. Eric formerly worked as Chief Watershed Ecologist at the Clinton River Watershed Council before becoming the Freshwater Program Coordinator at Oakland County Parks in 2023.

Brooke Hiller, Friends of the St. Clair River

Brooke has many years of gardening experience in various climates across the US and is passionate about the importance of native plants and sustainable landscaping practices. Since 2021, she has served as Restoration Coordinator with Friends of the St. Clair River, an environmental nonprofit organization serving St. Clair County. Brooke implements environmental services across the St. Clair River Watershed through invasive species management, native species education and planting, and habitat monitoring and maintenance. She currently serves as the Go Beyond Beauty Hub Coordinator for St. Clair and Macomb counties and is a member of the Wildflower Association of Michigan’s Environmental Advocacy Committee. She earned her MA from Wayne State University in 2009 and has completed Master Gardener, Master Composter and Conservation Steward certifications.
